14nnrrnA man from Kosovo was arrested just moments before he was due to take part in a suspected sham marriage in Blackburn.
Officers attended the Register Office, in Northgate, shortly before 15:00 on Friday 14th February. Ah, Valentines Day how romantic.
Anyway just before the ceremony was due to begin officers intervened and the 29-year-old man was arrested after checks revealed he was in the country illegally.
He had been due to marry a 20-year-old British woman, who was interviewed by officers and later released. The ‘groom’ has been detained pending his removal from the UK.
By the way
Official figures show that between January and October last year, a total of 7,606 fake weddings were reported to the Home Office yet just 90 people were deported over the same period for engaging in false marriages to gain entry to the UK. Mind you 7,606 fake marriages and one of the participants is normally legal and always gets off Scot free so that cuts it down to 3,803 possibles to deport. Not so bad eh?
