Four immigration offenders living on a boat in North Shields fishing harbour have been arrested following a raid.
Officers visited the site at about 6:25am on Monday 24th June after the Maritime and Coastguard Agency informed them the vessel, MV Starward, was unsafe and that people appeared to be living there without electricity or heating.
The officers questioned the four men and then arrested them for overstaying their visas. They were two Indians aged 35 and Filipinos aged 30 and 34. All four were transferred to immigration detention pending removal from the UK.
Seven illegal workers from India and Bangladesh have been arrested following an operation by Immigration Enforcement team and Police Scotland in Dunoon. Officers visited the Bombay restaurant in Argyll Street and Bangladesh Tandoori in John Street on 22nd June.
Checks on the immigration status of staff revealed five men from India at the Bombay who had no right to work in the UK. Two illegal workers from Bangladesh were then found at the Bangladesh Tandoori. They were arrested and have all been detained pending their removal from the country.
Two men wanted in connection with a major Immigration Enforcement investigation into suspected people smuggling gangs have been arrested and brought back to the UK.
The pair, 37-year-old Jayakody Surtharshan of Bradley Road in Luton and John Anes Soundaranayagam Uvais, 41, of Mitcham Road, East Ham, London were arrested by police in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday 14th June.
Extradition warrants were obtained and specialist Immigration Enforcement officers flew out to Switzerland and took them into custody. The pair were brought back to Heathrow Airport on Friday 21st June, now we’ll never get rid of them.
They will appear before Maidstone magistrates court charged with conspiring to assist with illegal immigration. Then what, suspended sentence and permanent residency in the UK?
