Thirteen illegal workers caught

Thirteen immigration offenders, yes thirteen, were found working illegally following a UK Border Agency raid on an Indian restaurant and takeaway in Manchester.

IlieActing on information received, officers visited the Lal Qila restaurant on Winslow Road and the adjoining takeaway in Thurloe Street, Manchester on Friday (6 May), and questioned staff to ensure they had the right to work in the UK.

A 22 year-old Afghan man and a 21 year-old Pakistan man were arrested and detained for immigration offences including illegal working and breach of visa conditions.

Enquiries are continuing into the status of the other eleven illegal employees who were on site.

The Lal Qila has already been caught employing illegal workers in December 2009 and a penalty notice for £25,000 was issued for illegal workers. The owner obviously was not deterred from employing illegals so perhaps a prison sentence is required. Fat chance of that happening!

IlieThe owner of a string of car washes has been sentenced yesterday after he admitted employing illegal workers and money laundering.

Defrim Paci, a 32-years-old Albanian, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to 12 months, suspended for two years, 250 hours community service and a 12 month supervision order after he pleaded guilty to employing illegal workers and money laundering profits of £144,000.

Suspended sentence, what sort of deterrent is that?

This follows an investigation by Criminal & Financial Investigation (Immigration) Team that started back in 2009. Paci admitted ownership or part ownership of car washes in Loughborough, Chesterfield, Sutton in Ashfield and Barrow-in-Furness.

In total six illegal immigrants were found to be working illegally for Paci’s car washes during the investigation.
