Ten illegal workers in one restaurant!

IlieTen illegal workers have been arrested following a UK Border Agency raid on a restaurant in Paddington.

Acting on intelligence, officers visited the Al Shishawi on Edgware Road at around 19:00 on the evening of Saturday 12 March, where they checked staff to ensure they had the right to work in the UK.

The ten illegal workers were arrested for a variety of immigration offences – six Egyptian men, three men from Mauritania, Libya and Kuwait, a woman from Morocco and a partridge in a pear tree!

Nine of the ten have been detained pending their removal from the UK while the other has been granted immigration bail to disappear into the world of illegal workers once again.

The employer should face a fine of up to £10,000 per illegal worker unless it can prove to the UK Border Agency that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.

Don’t make me laugh, how’s a restaurant going to come up with £100,000 to pay this fine more likely to declare themselves bankrupt and open up with a different name and a relative down as the owner.

A better deterrent for those blatantly employing illegal workers is to shut the restaurant down and imprison the owner.
