‘Big Issue’, big loophole for Romanian immigrants

Posted: February 8, 2011 in British jobs for British workers, Broken Britain

IlieIs nothing sacred, the homeless self employed bloke standing on the street corner selling the ‘Big Issue’ and able to keep the profits to buy food has been replaced by Romanian immigrants living in houses, selling only a few issues a week which enables them to claim benefits.

People from Romania cannot claim full rights of other EU citizens in Britain because it only joined the bloc in 2007.

Vendors of Big Issue however, have to declare themselves self-employed which entitles them to a National Insurance number and the right to claim welfare benefits such as working tax credit and housing benefit. All the Romanians have to do is buy a bundle of the magazine, sell a few copies and hey presto the door to a host of benefits is opened.
