Sham marriage couple convicted

IlieA would-be Dutch bride, her Nigerian groom and a member of their ‘wedding’ party were given jail sentences at Manchester Crown Court for staging a sham marriage in a bid to beat UK immigration rules.

The ‘bride’ Cindy Bonsu a 20-year-old Dutch-Ghanaian, was given a 7 month jail sentence suspended for 12 months while the ‘groom’ Dennis William, a 36-year-old Nigerian, was jailed for 15 months. Both had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to facilitate illegal immigration at a court hearing in September this year. William, who also admitted possession of a forged UK driving licence, was jailed for a further 12 months to run concurrently.

The couple, who claim to have met on Facebook, were arrested shortly before the wedding ceremony at St Chysostom’s Church, Manchester, in April 2010.

A member of the wedding party Ganiyu Ajao, another Nigerian, was also arrested and admitted conspiracy to facilitate illegal immigration at the hearing in September. Ajao was jailed for 12 months.

80% of staff were illegal workers

IlieDuring UKBA raids on three businesses in Cornwall, Friday, 29 October one of the businesses, Oriental Touch, Tywardreath Highway, St Blazey, had four of the five members of staff on duty working illegally.

All Chinese, two men – aged 26 and 39 – were failed asylum seekers, a 20-year-old woman had entered the UK illegally and a 24-year-old woman had stayed in the UK illegally after her visa expired.

Meanwhile at Dragon Pearl takeaway, Clifden Road, St Austell, a 37-year-old Chinese man who had entered the UK illegally was found employed in the kitchen.

At East Meets West, Beach Road, Carlyon Bay, St Austell, two illegal workers were found – a 20-year-old Chinese woman who had entered the UK illegally and a 30-year-old Malaysian man who had stayed in the UK after his visa expired.

Six of the seven offenders were arrested and taken to Launceston police station. They remain in detention pending their removal from the UK.

The 24-year-old woman found at Oriental Touch was placed on immigration bail and must report weekly to a police station that’s if she doesn’t scarper and start working somewhere else illegally..
