Ewen Cameron has stood down from the Conservative group and will now act as an independent.

Mr Cameron took the decision after it was revealed that he faces two charges of drink driving.

A statement from the Conservatives said: “The Conservative district councillor for Bradstowe Ward in Broadstairs, has today resigned the Conservative whip. This decision was taken by Cllr Cameron, following the recent publicity surrounding a police charge of being in charge of a motor vehicle while above the alcohol limit and relates to an incident that occurred in August.
“With less than a year until the next district elections, Cllr Cameron has stated that he does not plan to contest his council seat in May 2011 and will, until then, represent his ward as an independent councillor.”

Meanwhile in Calais

IlieOn Friday 27 August, UK Border Agency officers working at Calais noticed the lock on a Polish-registered lorry had been tampered with. A search revealed eight Vietnamese and one Iranian national hiding amongst a load of toothpaste heading for Castleford, West Yorkshire.

Also at Calais, six Afghans were sniffed out by a detection dog which discovered them hiding amongst party supplies on Sunday 29 August. The Bulgarian-registered lorry, driven by a man from Greece, was travelling to Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Party poopers!
