Takeaway was serious risk to public

IlieThe former owner of Chung Wah Express in Luton Road, Chatham, has been jailed for 28 days after he admitted exposing the public to a serious risk of electrocution, food poisoning and gas explosion.

Zhi Hua Zhao, 52, pleaded guilty to 10 separate food safety and health and safety offences at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday.

The case followed a series of visits by environmental health officers between September 2007 and February 2009.

During this time the premises was visited 16 times and 23 legal notices served, including:

Five health and safety prohibition notices

Two health and safety improvement notices and

16 food hygiene improvement notices

This is a list of some of the offences:

A failure to train food handlers

Failure to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees.

Failure to maintain an electrical installation in a safe condition.

Failure to keep the premises clean.

Failure to have in place a documented food safety management system.

Failure to comply with four hygiene improvement notices.

Failure to comply with a health and safety prohibition notice.


Anyway talking about foreigners

Two Malaysian men were found working illegally at the Foo Kwai restaurant in Dromore Street, Ballynahinch, County Down on Wednesday 7 July. Both had overstayed their visas and were removed to Malaysia on Tuesday 13 July.

A 40-year-old Pakistani national was arrested at his home in Wallasey, Merseyside, after immigration checks flagged him as overstaying his visa. During a search of the house UKBA officers discovered and seized over £7,000 cash which was spread around the property. At Liverpool Magistrates Court on Tuesday 13 July, UKBA were granted a further detention of the cash for four months while the investigation continues.
