A corrupt policeman has been jailed for letting women drivers off motoring offences in exchange for sex.

PC Jamie Slater, 33, abused his position by telling them he would ignore their crimes if they agreed to his demands.

The married father-of-two asked the women for mobile phone numbers and then bombarded them with obscene text messages. Two agreed to have sex with him in his police car.

He was caught when one of his victims reported him and a police investigation discovered he had been using the national police computer to find information about the women.

Peter Davies, prosecuting, told a court the policeman stopped a married woman who was driving alone with only a provisional driving licence. After taking her details, he said he would have to impound the woman’s car, which made her cry.

‘Slater told her if she gave him her mobile number he would not cause the car to be retained,’ Mr Davies said.

The policeman then contacted her by text message and the pair met for sex on an industrial estate near the M4.

Mr Davies said this happened three further times when Slater was on duty. ‘On one occasion Slater was called out and involved in a high-speed chase while the woman was hiding in the vehicle,’ he added.

The court heard the married woman ended the relationship when the policeman’s sexual demands ‘became more unusual’.

Slater, who worked for South Wales Police for eight years before being dismissed in December, used the police computer to gather details of the women and their personal lives. He even sent the husband of one woman a text message which read: ‘I’m ****ing your wife.’

The court heard Slater also harassed a woman who refused to meet him after he stopped her for having no insurance.

Mr Davies said: ‘He was annoyed by her lack of response but continued to send her messages. They were suggestive, asking her to wear stockings and saying he was dreaming of her. He would tell her where she had been and what she had been wearing, adding sexual nuances.’ ‘She felt like she was being stalked – he would pull up outside her work and stay there in a patrol car for 20 minutes.’

Cardiff Crown Court heard how another woman stopped by Slater for going through a red light was then pestered for sex, which she refused.

Slater was jailed for three-and-a-half years after he admitted misconduct in public office.

Wouldn’t it be kind of amusing if he ended up sharing a cell with the husband that the sent the text message to!
