Judge says “hardly suprising Kosovan carried knife”.

Luan Shkolla, 33, was arrested with the five-and-a-half inch knife after behaving oddly on November 2 last year.

He claimed he had found the knife in the street and was just about to turn it over to the police. That old chestnut!

Shkolla had been searched after police became concerned about a group of men hanging around a car in Sentamu Close, Tulse Hill, south east London. He said the car was for sale but appeared nervous.

IlieOfficers then searched Shkolla, who came to the UK 12 years ago from Kosovo, and discovered the Kershaw Trooper blade.

Deputy Circuit Judge Phillip Clegg QC said he could understand why Shkolla, who lives in Dalston, east London, had the knife. It was carried to protect himself. Seeing where he lives its hardly surprising. The dagger was particularly fearsome. Its only purpose was either to inflict really serious bodily harm or to kill. The public are rightly concerned with the prevalence of knives on the streets of our cities. Already courts take a very serious view, even in cases where a weapon wasn’t used.”

But the judge only imposed a 12 week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered that Shkolla do 180 hours of unpaid work.

Shkolla pleaded not guilty to unlawful possession of the knife at his trial on March 5 this year but was convicted by the jury,
