Police caught two men trying to steal a parking meter with an electric saw, one of the men claimed he was just trying to get his money back.

IliePaul Grandidge, 35, and his friend Simon Myers, 37, were caught trying to steal the council machine from the Sun Lane car park, Wakefield at 11pm on Thursday, February 4.

Prosecutor Stephen Fox told Wakefield Magistrates’ Court the meter was a “hefty, huge machine. It would appear someone had attempted to saw away at the base to cut through and steal the machine.”
Grandidge, of Wakefield Road, Normanton, claimed he had lost £1.20 earlier “and was trying to retrieve it”. But Mr Fox dismissed his explanation as “farcical”.

Myers, also of Wakefield Road, said they went out to steal the machine. Both defendants admitted attempted theft this week.

Caroline Deacon, mitigating for both, said Grandidge hired the saw for renovations at home and that was why it was in the car. She added: “Mr Grandidge had put £1.20 in the machine earlier that day and it had not produced the ticket and they weren’t happy about that.”

The court heard they would have obtained the contents but said they would have left the machine. Unemployed Myers, who has no previous convictions, told the judge he was sorry, saying: “times are hard”. Grandidge said he’d been “stupid”.
Deputy District Judge Joanne Hirst, passing sentence, said: “This is nuisance crime, inconvenience for the local authority and the community as well.”

Grandidge, who has previous convictions for other matters, received a 12-month community order with an 80-hour unpaid work requirement.
He must also pay £85 in court costs and £50 in compensation.

Myers was given a 12-month conditional discharge and must pay the same financial penalties.
